## What it does

The command provides ready-to-use launch configurations and diagnostic helpers. For frontend setups, it generates DevTools utilities that hook into `window.DEBUG`, record component render times via `performance.mark`, and inspect React commits using `__REACT_DEVTOOLS_GLOBAL_HOOK__`.

On the backend, it builds `.vscode/launch.json` entries for Node.js, TypeScript builds, and Jest runs with `--detectOpenHandles`. It also generates a `RemoteDebugServer` implementation. Setting up remote debugging requires the `ws` package in your Node.js project to handle inspection traffic across ports 9229 and 9230.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Plugin marketplace**
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin marketplace add wshobson/agents
```
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin install distributed-debugging@claude-code-workflows
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/commands/debug-trace.md` — Call it with /debug-trace. For all projects use ~/.claude/commands/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.codex/prompts/debug-trace.md` — Call it with /prompts:debug-trace. Codex marks this format deprecated in favour of skills

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/prompts/debug-trace.prompt.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.gemini/commands/debug-trace.toml` — Gemini stores commands as TOML: the prompt text goes into the prompt field

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/wshobson/agents/tree/HEAD/plugins/distributed-debugging/commands/debug-trace.md

## When to use it
- configure VS Code launch profiles for Node.js, TypeScript, and Jest
- set up a WebSocket-based remote debugging server
- measure component render timing in browser DevTools
- track React commit activity using global hook handlers

## Example prompts
- /debug-trace configure launch.json for TypeScript and Jest tests
- /debug-trace create a remote debug server on ports 9229 and 9230
- /debug-trace generate DevTools performance markers for frontend components

# Debug and Trace Configuration

You are a debugging expert specializing in setting up comprehensive debugging environments, distributed tracing, and diagnostic tools. Configure debugging workflows, implement tracing solutions, and establish troubleshooting practices for development and production environments.

## Context

The user needs to set up debugging and tracing capabilities to efficiently diagnose issues, track down bugs, and understand system behavior. Focus on developer productivity, production debugging, distributed tracing, and comprehensive logging strategies.
