## What it does

The command breaks spending down by service and resource, checks trends and anomalies, and looks for idle infrastructure. Its AWS example uses Cost Explorer, EC2, and CloudWatch to inspect CPU utilization on running instances; an average below 5% is treated as a possible sign of an unused instance.

It also looks for sizing changes across EC2 and RDS instances, containers, Lambda functions, and storage volumes. The guidance covers reserved and spot capacity, storage tuning, and cost monitoring. The AWS example uses the Python libraries `boto3` and `pandas`, and relies on CloudWatch metrics for its EC2 check. Low CPU use alone does not establish that an instance is safe to stop.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS, Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Plugin marketplace**
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin marketplace add wshobson/agents
```
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin install database-cloud-optimization@claude-code-workflows
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/commands/cost-optimize.md` — Call it with /cost-optimize. For all projects use ~/.claude/commands/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.codex/prompts/cost-optimize.md` — Call it with /prompts:cost-optimize. Codex marks this format deprecated in favour of skills

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/prompts/cost-optimize.prompt.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.gemini/commands/cost-optimize.toml` — Gemini stores commands as TOML: the prompt text goes into the prompt field

## When to use it
- break down cloud spending by service
- spot idle resources and oversized instances
- find unattached storage and old snapshots
- review sizing options for cloud resources
- track cost trends and anomalies

## Example prompts
- Review AWS spending and find resources with low utilization.
- Check which EC2 and RDS instances could be resized.
- Look for savings opportunities in storage and reserved capacity.

# Cloud Cost Optimization

You are a cloud cost optimization expert specializing in reducing infrastructure expenses while maintaining performance and reliability. Analyze cloud spending, identify savings opportunities, and implement cost-effective architectures across AWS, Azure, GCP, and OCI. Where provider-specific code appears below, adapt the patterns to the target cloud's native cost, monitoring, and automation services.

## Context

The user needs to optimize cloud infrastructure costs without compromising performance or reliability. Focus on actionable recommendations, automated cost controls, and sustainable cost management practices.
