## What it does

The command takes your task from the argument and works through it step by step. First it pins down the code scope, the kinds of variations you are weighing, the quality criteria and any constraints. When the context is thin, it asks back about the algorithm, the architecture pattern, an optimization target or a data structure choice.

From there it builds a variation matrix: algorithmic, architectural, tech stack and performance profile. Each variant gets described by its dependencies, pattern, data flow and the resources it needs from the team. Simulation covers performance, maintainability, scalability and security.

Scoring runs across four groups of equal weight: performance, maintainability, reliability and business factors. The final score is a weighted sum, and thresholds are set per group. That makes the command worth reaching for when reversing an approach later would be expensive. One caveat: the 25% weights are baked into the scoring formula, so if your project cares about different things, you will have to redo the math by hand.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **claude-code-templates**
```bash
npx claude-code-templates@latest --command utilities/code-permutation-tester
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/commands/code-permutation-tester.md` — Call it with /code-permutation-tester. For all projects use ~/.claude/commands/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.codex/prompts/code-permutation-tester.md` — Call it with /prompts:code-permutation-tester. Codex marks this format deprecated in favour of skills

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/prompts/code-permutation-tester.prompt.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.gemini/commands/code-permutation-tester.toml` — Gemini stores commands as TOML: the prompt text goes into the prompt field

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/davila7/claude-code-templates/tree/HEAD/cli-tool/components/commands/utilities/code-permutation-tester.md

## When to use it
- compare several algorithms for one problem before coding
- pick an architecture pattern with maintainability in mind
- weigh optimization options by speed and memory
- see how a design holds up as load grows
- lock down acceptance criteria before development starts

## Example prompts
- /code-permutation-tester compare three caching approaches for the orders module
- /code-permutation-tester evaluate search implementations: brute force, index, hybrid
- /code-permutation-tester simulate two API architectures and show the group scores

# Code Permutation Tester

Test multiple code variations through simulation before implementation with quality gates and performance prediction.

## Instructions

You are tasked with systematically testing multiple code implementation approaches through simulation to optimize decisions before actual development. Follow this approach: **$ARGUMENTS**

### 1. Prerequisites Assessment

**Critical Code Context Validation:**

- **Code Scope**: What specific code area/function/feature are you testing variations for?
- **Variation Types**: What different approaches are you considering?
- **Quality Criteria**: How will you evaluate which variation is best?
- **Constraints**: What technical, performance, or resource constraints apply?
- **Decision Timeline**: When do you need to choose an implementation approach?

**If context is unclear, guide systematically:**

```
Missing Code Scope:
"What specific code area needs permutation testing?
- Algorithm Implementation: Different algorithmic approaches for the same problem
- Architecture Pattern: Various structural patterns (MVC, microservices, etc.)
- Performance Optimization: Multiple optimization strategies for bottlenecks
- API Design: Different interface design approaches
- Data Structure Choice: Various data organization strategies
Please specify the exact function, module, or system component."
Missing Variation Types:
"What different implementation approaches are you considering?
- Algorithmic Variations: Different algorithms solving the same problem
- Framework/Library Choices: Various tech stack options
- Design Pattern Applications: Different structural and behavioral patterns
- Performance Trade-offs: Speed vs. memory vs. maintainability variations
- Integration Approaches: Different ways to connect with existing systems"
```

### 2. Code Variation Generation

**Systematically identify and structure implementation alternatives:**

#### Implementation Approach Matrix
```
Code Variation Framework:
Algorithmic Variations:
- Brute Force: Simple, readable implementation
- Optimized: Performance-focused with complexity trade-offs
- Hybrid: Balanced approach with configurable optimization
- Novel: Innovative approaches using new techniques
Architectural Variations:
- Monolithic: Single deployment unit with tight coupling
- Modular: Loosely coupled modules within single codebase
- Microservices: Distributed services with independent deployment
- Serverless: Function-based with cloud provider management
Technology Stack Variations:
- Traditional: Established, well-documented technologies
- Modern: Current best practices and recent frameworks
- Cutting-edge: Latest technologies with higher risk/reward
- Hybrid: Mix of established and modern approaches
Performance Profile Variations:
- Memory-optimized: Minimal memory footprint
- Speed-optimized: Maximum execution performance
- Scalability-optimized: Handles growth efficiently
- Maintainability-optimized: Easy to modify and extend
```

#### Variation Specification Framework
```
For each code variation:
Implementation Details:
- Core Algorithm/Approach: [specific technical approach]
- Key Dependencies: [frameworks, libraries, external services]
- Architecture Pattern: [structural organization approach]
- Data Flow Design: [how information moves through system]
