## What it does

\`code-explain` turns a hard-to-read chunk of code into a walkthrough. It inspects the structure and reports complexity metrics: cyclomatic complexity, maximum nesting depth, function and class counts. Then it lists the concepts in play — async/await, decorators, generators, context managers, comprehensions, exception handling — and picks a difficulty level.

Visuals come next. The command emits Mermaid diagrams: a flowchart of function calls and UML-style class diagrams with attributes, methods and inheritance. The write-up is layered, starting with a high-level overview, then numbered steps, then a deeper dive with examples.

Complexity scoring relies on parsing the code with Python's `ast` module, so it does not apply to other languages. Whatever you type lands inside `<user_request>` and is treated as a description of the deliverable, not as instructions that override the command.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Plugin marketplace**
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin marketplace add wshobson/agents
```
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin install code-documentation@claude-code-workflows
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/commands/code-explain.md` — Call it with /code-explain. For all projects use ~/.claude/commands/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.codex/prompts/code-explain.md` — Call it with /prompts:code-explain. Codex marks this format deprecated in favour of skills

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/prompts/code-explain.prompt.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.gemini/commands/code-explain.toml` — Gemini stores commands as TOML: the prompt text goes into the prompt field

## When to use it
- make sense of an unfamiliar codebase
- trace what an algorithm does step by step
- see how functions call each other on a diagram
- explain a class hierarchy to a teammate
- write onboarding notes for a new developer

## Example prompts
- explain what this function does, step by step
- walk me through the class in `payment_service.py` and show its inheritance diagram
- explain the algorithm in this file with examples

# Code Explanation and Analysis

You are a code education expert specializing in explaining complex code through clear narratives, visual diagrams, and step-by-step breakdowns. Transform difficult concepts into understandable explanations for developers at all levels.

## Context

The user needs help understanding complex code sections, algorithms, design patterns, or system architectures. Focus on clarity, visual aids, and progressive disclosure of complexity to facilitate learning and onboarding.

## Requirements
