## What it does

\`build-mcp` comes from Cloudflare's plugin and kicks off a guided build of a remote MCP server. The agent starts with `skills/building-mcp-server-on-cloudflare/SKILL.md`, then pulls official templates from `references/examples.md`, security and OAuth guidance from `references/oauth-setup.md`, and fixes for common failures from `references/troubleshooting.md`. Those files ship alongside the command, so a bare copy of the prompt file gets you nowhere.

What the command covers: deployment to Cloudflare Workers, OAuth 2.0 setup, defining and implementing tools, production deployment patterns, and wiring the result into Claude and other MCP clients. You pass a single argument describing the server you want.

Drop the file at `~/.codex/prompts/build-mcp.md` for Claude. Claude expects `.claude/commands/build-mcp.md` instead, so moving the command between platforms means checking the path, not just the filename.

## Install

### Codex (native platform)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.codex/prompts/build-mcp.md` — Call it with /prompts:build-mcp. Codex marks this format deprecated in favour of skills

### Claude Code

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/commands/build-mcp.md` — Call it with /build-mcp. For all projects use ~/.claude/commands/

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/prompts/build-mcp.prompt.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.gemini/commands/build-mcp.toml` — Gemini stores commands as TOML: the prompt text goes into the prompt field

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/openai/plugins/tree/HEAD/plugins/cloudflare/commands/build-mcp.md

## When to use it
- stand up a remote MCP server on Cloudflare Workers
- add OAuth 2.0 auth to an MCP server
- define and implement server tools
- deploy the server using production patterns
- connect the finished server to Claude as an MCP client

## Example prompts
- /cloudflare:build-mcp a GitHub integration server
- /cloudflare:build-mcp database query tool with OAuth
- /cloudflare:build-mcp file management MCP server
