# add-to-changelog

Adds an entry to CHANGELOG.md following Keep a Changelog: version, change type, message. Handy when a release is close and the file still has nothing for it.

## What it does

The command takes three arguments: version, change type and message. Change type is one of added, changed, deprecated, removed, fixed, security. If CHANGELOG.md is missing, it gets created with a standard header. Then the command finds or creates the section for that version with today's date and drops the entry under the matching heading.

Short flags work too: `--added`, `--changed`, `--fixed`. Under the hood it reads `CHANGELOG.md` plus `package.json` or `setup.py` when those exist, so a new version also updates the package version file. Read, Write, Edit and Bash are the tools it is allowed to use.

Make sure the version you pass is the one you actually plan to ship, because that same number lands in `package.json`. The command does not restructure an existing changelog — if your file has its own layout, the entry follows the command's rules, not yours.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **claude-code-templates**
```bash
npx claude-code-templates@latest --command project-management/add-to-changelog
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/commands/add-to-changelog.md` — Call it with /add-to-changelog. For all projects use ~/.claude/commands/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.codex/prompts/add-to-changelog.md` — Call it with /prompts:add-to-changelog. Codex marks this format deprecated in favour of skills

### GitHub Copilot

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/prompts/add-to-changelog.prompt.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.gemini/commands/add-to-changelog.toml` — Gemini stores commands as TOML: the prompt text goes into the prompt field

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/davila7/claude-code-templates/tree/HEAD/cli-tool/components/commands/project-management/add-to-changelog.md

## When to use it
- log a change in CHANGELOG.md without opening the file
- bootstrap CHANGELOG.md in Keep a Changelog format
- sort entries under added, changed, fixed and the rest
- bump the version in package.json or setup.py along with the entry
- stamp the release date on a version section

## Example prompts
- /add-to-changelog 1.1.0 added "New markdown to BlockDoc conversion"
- /add-to-changelog 1.0.2 fixed "Bug in HTML renderer"
- /add-to-changelog --changed "Rewrote the data access layer"

# Update Changelog

Add a new entry to the project's CHANGELOG.md file: **$ARGUMENTS**

## Usage Examples
- `/add-to-changelog 1.1.0 added "New markdown to BlockDoc conversion feature"`
- `/add-to-changelog 1.0.2 fixed "Bug in HTML renderer causing incorrect output"`

## Current Changelog State

- Existing changelog: @CHANGELOG.md (if exists)
- Project version files: @package.json or @setup.py (if exists)

## Task

Add the specified change entry to CHANGELOG.md:

**Arguments**:
- Version: First argument (e.g., "1.1.0")
- Change Type: Second argument (added/changed/deprecated/removed/fixed/security)
- Message: Third argument (description of the change)

**Requirements**:
1. Create CHANGELOG.md with standard header if it doesn't exist
2. Find or create version section with today's date
3. Add entry under appropriate change type section
4. Follow Keep a Changelog format and Semantic Versioning
5. Update package version files if this is a new version

The changelog should follow [Keep a Changelog](https://keepachangelog.com/) format.

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the cd6681b3ad1c6f71 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
