## What it does

This subagent covers the path from embedding model choice to index configuration. It knows Pinecone, Qdrant, Weaviate, Milvus, pgvector and Chroma, plus Voyage AI, OpenAI and open models like BGE and E5. The workflow is laid out in order: analyze data volume and latency needs, pick a model, design chunking, choose a database, then configure the index.

Hybrid retrieval gets its own section — vector ranking fused with BM25, Reciprocal Rank Fusion, reranking with cross-encoders. On indexes you get HNSW, IVF and PQ or INT8/FP16 quantization, framed around the recall, latency and memory tradeoff. Production work is covered too: latency percentiles, sharding, blue-green index rebuilds, embedding drift.

One practical detail: it advises Voyage AI for Claude-based applications and suggests chunk sizes of 500–1000 tokens with 10–20% overlap. Those are starting points to test against your own queries, not limits. If you already run Chroma and it no longer fits, the subagent can walk you through a move to Qdrant.

## Requirements
- Works with: PostgreSQL

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Plugin marketplace**
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin marketplace add wshobson/agents
```
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin install llm-application-dev@claude-code-workflows
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/agents/vector-database-engineer.md` — For all projects use ~/.claude/agents/. Claude delegates by the description field or an @-mention

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.codex/agents/vector-database-engineer.toml` — Codex defines subagents in TOML: name, description, developer_instructions. Move the Markdown text into developer_instructions by hand. For all projects use ~/.codex/agents/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/agents/vector-database-engineer.md` — Cursor also reads .claude/agents/

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/wshobson/agents/tree/HEAD/plugins/llm-application-dev/agents/vector-database-engineer.md

## When to use it
- pick a vector database for your data volume and latency budget
- match an embedding model to general, code or domain search
- tune HNSW or IVF+PQ around the recall and memory tradeoff
- combine vector and keyword ranking into hybrid search
- rebuild an index without downtime using blue-green

## Example prompts
- Design a vector search system for 10M documents with P95 under 100ms
- Tune HNSW parameters for better recall without adding latency
- Build hybrid search: semantic plus BM25 with reranking
