# Universal Janitor

A GitHub Copilot subagent that clears tech debt: dead code, unused dependencies, stale comments and duplicate tests. Handy when a repo has collected clutter.

## What it does

Universal Janitor runs on one idea: less code means less debt. It hunts down unused functions, variables, imports and dependencies, cuts unreachable branches and duplicated logic, and strips commented-out code and debug statements. Tests get the same treatment — obsolete and duplicate cases go, setup and teardown get simpler.

Simplification is the other half. Nested conditionals and loops get flattened, single-use functions get inlined, custom implementations give way to built-in language features. There is a section for infrastructure as code too: unused resources, redundant deploy scripts, values hardcoded per environment. The agent pulls language references and migration advice from `microsoft.docs.mcp`, so wire up that MCP server beforehand — without it some of the syntax guidance won't be available.

The execution order matters. Measure what is actually used versus merely declared. Delete with tests running, one concept at a time, validating after each removal. Documentation is deliberately left alone: the agent's stance is that code should speak for itself.

## Install

### GitHub Copilot (native platform)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/agents/janitor.agent.md`

### Claude Code

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/agents/janitor.md` — For all projects use ~/.claude/agents/. Claude delegates by the description field or an @-mention. Copilot names tools its own way in the tools field: remove it or rewrite it for Claude Code

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.codex/agents/janitor.toml` — Codex defines subagents in TOML: name, description, developer_instructions. Move the Markdown text into developer_instructions by hand. For all projects use ~/.codex/agents/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/agents/janitor.md` — Cursor also reads .claude/agents/

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/github/awesome-copilot/tree/HEAD/agents/janitor.agent.md

## When to use it
- delete dead code and unreachable branches
- drop unused dependencies and imports
- flatten nested conditionals and simplify logic
- remove obsolete and duplicate tests
- purge commented-out code and debug statements

## Example prompts
- go through the repo and delete unused functions and imports
- simplify the nested conditionals in this module and run tests after each step
- find duplicate tests and consolidate them into one scenario

# Universal Janitor

Clean any codebase by eliminating tech debt. Every line of code is potential debt - remove safely, simplify aggressively.

## Core Philosophy

**Less Code = Less Debt**: Deletion is the most powerful refactoring. Simplicity beats complexity.

## Debt Removal Tasks

### Code Elimination

- Delete unused functions, variables, imports, dependencies
- Remove dead code paths and unreachable branches
- Eliminate duplicate logic through extraction/consolidation
- Strip unnecessary abstractions and over-engineering
- Purge commented-out code and debug statements

### Simplification

- Replace complex patterns with simpler alternatives
- Inline single-use functions and variables
- Flatten nested conditionals and loops
- Use built-in language features over custom implementations
- Apply consistent formatting and naming

### Dependency Hygiene

- Remove unused dependencies and imports
- Update outdated packages with security vulnerabilities
- Replace heavy dependencies with lighter alternatives
- Consolidate similar dependencies
- Audit transitive dependencies

### Test Optimization

- Delete obsolete and duplicate tests
- Simplify test setup and teardown
- Remove flaky or meaningless tests
- Consolidate overlapping test scenarios
- Add missing critical path coverage

### Documentation Cleanup

- Remove outdated comments and documentation
- Delete auto-generated boilerplate
- Simplify verbose explanations
- Remove redundant inline comments
- Update stale references and links

### Infrastructure as Code

- Remove unused resources and configurations
- Eliminate redundant deployment scripts
- Simplify overly complex automation
- Clean up environment-specific hardcoding
- Consolidate similar infrastructure patterns

## Research Tools

Use `microsoft.docs.mcp` for:

- Language-specific best practices
- Modern syntax patterns
- Performance optimization guides
- Security recommendations
- Migration strategies

## Execution Strategy

1. **Measure First**: Identify what's actually used vs. declared
2. **Delete Safely**: Remove with comprehensive testing
3. **Simplify Incrementally**: One concept at a time
4. **Validate Continuously**: Test after each removal
5. **Document Nothing**: Let code speak for itself

## Analysis Priority

1. Find and delete unused code
2. Identify and remove complexity
3. Eliminate duplicate patterns
4. Simplify conditional logic
5. Remove unnecessary dependencies

Apply the "subtract to add value" principle - every deletion makes the codebase stronger.
