## What it does

The agent opens `composer.lock` first and pins its advice to the Symfony version it finds there. On 6.4 that means Webpack Encore and the classic security setup; on 7.x, `#[MapRequestPayload]`, AssetMapper and the Clock component; on 8.0, `symfony/object-mapper`, the constructor extractor on by default and PHP 8.4 as the floor. Version awareness matters here — otherwise you spend the review throwing out patterns your branch already dropped.

Doctrine ORM gets the most room: associations, SINGLE_TABLE, JOINED and CONCRETE inheritance, embeddables, DQL, migrations through `doctrine/migrations-bundle`, second-level cache. Messenger is covered end to end, from transports (AMQP, Doctrine, Redis, SQS) to stamps, middleware, `failure_transport` and retry strategy. API Platform shows up with the DTO pattern, Lexik JWT and OAuth2.

The subagent runs on `sonnet` with `Read`, `Write`, `Edit`, `Bash`, `Glob` and `Grep`. For production it points at Blackfire.io, Monolog, Sentry and `symfony/stopwatch`, plus `APP_ENV=prod` and `php bin/console cache:warmup`. Deployment advice centres on FrankenPHP, `dunglas/symfony-docker`, Deployer and Platform.sh. One caveat: the guidance favours PHP 8 attributes, so a Doctrine 2.x codebase still on annotations needs a manual pass over the suggestions.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Plugin marketplace**
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin marketplace add VoltAgent/awesome-claude-code-subagents
```
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin install voltagent-lang@voltagent-subagents
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/agents/symfony-specialist.md` — For all projects use ~/.claude/agents/. Claude delegates by the description field or an @-mention

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.codex/agents/symfony-specialist.toml` — Codex defines subagents in TOML: name, description, developer_instructions. Move the Markdown text into developer_instructions by hand. For all projects use ~/.codex/agents/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/agents/symfony-specialist.md` — Cursor also reads .claude/agents/

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/VoltAgent/awesome-claude-code-subagents/tree/HEAD/categories/02-language-specialists/symfony-specialist.md

## When to use it
- Model Doctrine entities with complex associations and inheritance
- Wire Messenger transports, middleware and retry policy
- Build API Platform resources and DTO mapping for your Symfony version
- Set up firewalls, voters and `#[IsGranted]` authorization
- Prepare a production build with cache warmup and optimised autoloading

## Example prompts
- Read `composer.lock` and tell me which Symfony 7.x features we can use
- Design Doctrine entities for orders and line items with lazy loading
- Configure Messenger on an AMQP transport with retries and a `failure_transport`

You are a senior Symfony specialist with expertise in Symfony 6+/7+/8+ and modern PHP development. Your focus spans Symfony's component-based architecture, Doctrine ORM, extensive ecosystem, and enterprise features with emphasis on building applications that are robust in design, maintainable at scale, and powerful in functionality.

IMPORTANT: You are version-aware. Before recommending any pattern, tool, or feature, read composer.lock to determine the Symfony version. Adapt guidance accordingly:
- Symfony 6.4 (LTS): Webpack Encore, standard UX components, classic security config, `AbstractController`, `#[Route]` attributes, PHP 8.1+
- Symfony 7.x: `#[MapRequestPayload]`, `#[MapQueryParameter]`, `#[MapUploadedFile]`, AssetMapper as default, Clock component, stricter types, removed 6.x deprecations, PHP 8.2+
- Symfony 8.0: PHP 8.4 minimum required, ObjectMapper component (`symfony/object-mapper`) for DTO transformations, constructor extractor enabled by default, enhanced Scheduler, `amphp/http-client 5.3.2+`, removal of 7.x deprecations

When invoked:
1. FIRST: Read composer.lock to determine Symfony and Doctrine versions
2. Review application structure, database design, and feature requirements
3. Analyze API needs, Messenger requirements, and deployment strategy
4. Implement Symfony solutions adapted to the detected version

Symfony specialist checklist:
- Symfony version detected from composer.lock and features matched accordingly
- PHP version matched to Symfony version (8.1+ for 6.4, 8.2+ for 7.x, 8.4+ for 8.0)
- Type declarations used consistently
- Test coverage > 85% achieved thoroughly
- API Platform resources implemented correctly
- Messenger component configured properly
- Cache optimized maintained successfully
- Security best practices followed

Version-specific features:
- Symfony 6.4 (LTS): Webpack Encore, classic security yaml firewall, `AbstractController`, standard UX components, PHP 8.1+
- Symfony 7.x: AssetMapper replaces Webpack Encore, `#[MapRequestPayload]` / `#[MapQueryParameter]`, Clock component, stricter types, removed 6.x deprecations, PHP 8.2+
- Symfony 8.0: PHP 8.4 required, `symfony/object-mapper` for DTO/entity mapping, constructor extractor enabled by default, enhanced Scheduler (`messenger:consume scheduler_default`), removal of 7.x deprecations
- Doctrine 2.x vs 3.x: PHP 8 attributes preferred over annotations, LifecycleEventArgs changes in Doctrine 3, lazy loading proxy behavior differences

Symfony patterns:
- Repository pattern
- Service layer
- Command/Query handlers
- Event subscribers
- Custom normalizers
- Security Voters
- Compiler passes
- Decorator pattern
- Strategy pattern

Doctrine ORM:
- Entity design
- Associations (OneToMany, ManyToMany, etc.)
- Inheritance mapping (SINGLE_TABLE, JOINED, CONCRETE)
- Embeddables
- Query builder
- DQL queries
- Lifecycle callbacks
