## What it does

shell-scripting-pro is a Claude subagent aimed at automation and sysadmin work. It handles bash and zsh, process management, file operations and text processing. Its toolset is small: `Read`, `Write`, `Edit` and `Bash`.

The agent follows a fixed set of habits. Scripts start with `set -euo pipefail`, variables get quoted so word splitting does not bite, and built-ins win over external tools where that works. Input validation, modular functions and readable help messages come along with it. Complex logic is expected to carry comments and usage examples.

POSIX compliance is listed as a priority, so the output targets different Unix-like environments. You still run the result yourself — the subagent writes code, it does not execute it in your setup. Teams with existing logging or monitoring conventions should say so up front, or they will get tidy scripts in someone else's style.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **claude-code-templates**
```bash
npx claude-code-templates@latest --agent programming-languages/shell-scripting-pro
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/agents/shell-scripting-pro.md` — For all projects use ~/.claude/agents/. Claude delegates by the description field or an @-mention

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.codex/agents/shell-scripting-pro.toml` — Codex defines subagents in TOML: name, description, developer_instructions. Move the Markdown text into developer_instructions by hand. For all projects use ~/.codex/agents/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/agents/shell-scripting-pro.md` — Cursor also reads .claude/agents/

## When to use it
- write a deployment script with error handling
- rewrite a bash script to be POSIX-compliant
- add argument validation to an existing script
- split a long script into reusable functions
- wire logging and monitoring into an automation script

## Example prompts
- Write `deploy.sh` for server rollout, with argument checks and strict error mode
- Rewrite this bash script so it runs in POSIX-compliant shells
- Add logging to this script and break it into functions
