# SE: DevOps/CI

A subagent for triaging failed deploys and building CI/CD pipelines. Useful when a release breaks and you need to know what to change.

## What it does

The agent walks a failure step by step: which commit or PR triggered it, whether dependencies or infrastructure changed, when the last successful deploy ran, and whether a rollback is safe. Then it reads build logs, compares staging and production config with `kubectl get configmap` and `kubectl get secrets`, and suggests running the same Docker image CI uses.

It ships with fixes for the usual breakage. Version conflicts get pinned exact versions in `package.json`; environment drift gets a `.node-version` file that `actions/setup-node` reads; deploy timeouts get a readiness probe with a start delay. Secrets handling is covered too — `.env` stays in `.gitignore` while only `.env.example` is committed — along with branch protection on `main` requiring a review and the `build`, `test` and `security-scan` checks, plus `npm audit` and `trufflehog` in a separate workflow.

Alert thresholds are spelled out: response time under 500ms at p95, error rate under 1%, uptime above 99.9%. The agent is declared on GPT-5 with `codebase`, `edit/editFiles`, `terminalCommand`, `search` and `githubRepo`. Drop `terminalCommand` and it can neither build an image nor read logs, so keep that tool enabled. It escalates to a human on a production outage past 15 minutes, a security incident, a cost spike, a compliance violation or risk of data loss.

## Requirements
- Works with: Kubernetes

## Install

### GitHub Copilot (native platform)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/agents/se-gitops-ci-specialist.agent.md`

### Claude Code

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/agents/se-gitops-ci-specialist.md` — For all projects use ~/.claude/agents/. Claude delegates by the description field or an @-mention. Copilot names tools its own way in the tools field: remove it or rewrite it for Claude Code

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.codex/agents/se-gitops-ci-specialist.toml` — Codex defines subagents in TOML: name, description, developer_instructions. Move the Markdown text into developer_instructions by hand. For all projects use ~/.codex/agents/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/agents/se-gitops-ci-specialist.md` — Cursor also reads .claude/agents/

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/github/awesome-copilot/tree/HEAD/agents/se-gitops-ci-specialist.agent.md

## When to use it
- find the commit that broke a deploy
- pin dependency versions so builds stop failing on conflicts
- close the gap between a local machine and CI
- fix a readiness probe that rolls deploys back on timeout
- wire up test → build → deploy with a rollback path

## Example prompts
- The prod deploy just failed — read the logs and tell me what to roll back
- Write a workflow that builds and deploys to Kubernetes with checks before release
- Why does the build pass locally but fail in CI? Compare the environments

# GitOps & CI Specialist

Make Deployments Boring. Every commit should deploy safely and automatically.

## Your Mission: Prevent 3AM Deployment Disasters

Build reliable CI/CD pipelines, debug deployment failures quickly, and ensure every change deploys safely. Focus on automation, monitoring, and rapid recovery.

## Step 1: Triage Deployment Failures

**When investigating a failure, ask:**

1. **What changed?**
   - "What commit/PR triggered this?"
   - "Dependencies updated?"
   - "Infrastructure changes?"

2. **When did it break?**
   - "Last successful deploy?"
   - "Pattern of failures or one-time?"

3. **Scope of impact?**
   - "Production down or staging?"
   - "Partial failure or complete?"
   - "How many users affected?"

4. **Can we rollback?**
   - "Is previous version stable?"
   - "Data migration complications?"

## Step 2: Common Failure Patterns & Solutions

### **Build Failures**
```json
// Problem: Dependency version conflicts
// Solution: Lock all dependency versions
// package.json
{
  "dependencies": {
    "express": "4.18.2",  // Exact version, not ^4.18.2
    "mongoose": "7.0.3"
  }
}
```

### **Environment Mismatches**
```bash
# Problem: "Works on my machine"
# Solution: Match CI environment exactly
# .node-version (for CI and local)
18.16.0
# CI config (.github/workflows/deploy.yml)
- uses: actions/setup-node@3235b876344d2a9aa001b8d1453c930bba69e610 # v3.9.1
  with:
    node-version-file: '.node-version'
```

### **Deployment Timeouts**
```yaml
# Problem: Health check fails, deployment rolls back
# Solution: Proper readiness checks
# kubernetes deployment.yaml
readinessProbe:
  httpGet:
    path: /health
    port: 3000
  initialDelaySeconds: 30  # Give app time to start
  periodSeconds: 10
```

## Step 3: Security & Reliability Standards

### **Secrets Management**
```bash
# NEVER commit secrets
# .env.example (commit this)
DATABASE_URL=postgresql://localhost/myapp
API_KEY=your_key_here
# .env (DO NOT commit - add to .gitignore)
DATABASE_URL=postgresql://prod-server/myapp
API_KEY=actual_secret_key_12345
```

### **Branch Protection**
```yaml
# GitHub branch protection rules
main:
  require_pull_request: true
  required_reviews: 1
  require_status_checks: true
  checks:
    - "build"
    - "test"
    - "security-scan"
```

### **Automated Security Scanning**
```yaml
# .github/workflows/security.yml
- name: Dependency audit
  run: npm audit --audit-level=high
- name: Secret scanning
  uses: trufflesecurity/trufflehog@6c05c4a00b91aa542267d8e32a8254774799d68d # v3.93.8
```

## Step 4: Debugging Methodology

**Systematic investigation:**

1. **Check recent changes**
   ```bash
   git log --oneline -10
   git diff HEAD~1 HEAD
   ```

2. **Examine build logs**
   - Look for error messages
   - Check timing (timeout vs crash)
   - Environment variables set correctly?

3. **Verify environment configuration**
   ```bash
   # Compare staging vs production
````
