## What it does

The `reverse-engineer` subagent handles binary analysis end to end. It identifies the file format (PE, ELF, Mach-O, DEX) and architecture, builds control flow and call graphs, recovers symbols and types, and parses vtables and RTTI. For dynamic work it drives debuggers and tracing tools. Supported tooling includes IDA Pro, Ghidra, radare2/rizin, Binary Ninja, x64dbg, WinDbg, GDB, Frida and QEMU.

Its methodology runs in four phases: reconnaissance, static analysis, dynamic analysis, documentation. Reconnaissance covers compiler and packer detection plus string and import extraction. Then the binary goes into a disassembler for entry point discovery and code annotation. The dynamic phase expects an isolated VM with network monitoring — without that, trace output tells you little. Documentation wraps up with function purposes, data structure layouts and pseudocode.

The agent ships pattern recipes for common tricks: XOR string obfuscation, `IsDebuggerPresent` checks, API name hashing, stack string construction. Calling conventions for x86, x64 and ARM are covered too. It declines work on unauthorized access, malicious tooling and license bypass — that boundary is built into its instructions. Scripting leans on IDAPython, r2pipe, pwntools, angr, capstone and unicorn.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Plugin marketplace**
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin marketplace add wshobson/agents
```
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin install reverse-engineering@claude-code-workflows
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/agents/reverse-engineer.md` — For all projects use ~/.claude/agents/. Claude delegates by the description field or an @-mention

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.codex/agents/reverse-engineer.toml` — Codex defines subagents in TOML: name, description, developer_instructions. Move the Markdown text into developer_instructions by hand. For all projects use ~/.codex/agents/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/agents/reverse-engineer.md` — Cursor also reads .claude/agents/

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/wshobson/agents/tree/HEAD/plugins/reverse-engineering/agents/reverse-engineer.md

## When to use it
- identify the format and architecture of an unknown binary
- reconstruct data structures and vtables
- trace API calls inside an isolated VM
- solve a CTF password check by reading the comparison logic
- find a buffer overflow or use-after-free in a closed-source library

## Example prompts
- Analyze this ELF file: identify the architecture, find main and show me the call graph
- This CTF binary asks for a password — how should I approach the analysis?
- Inspect this DLL's exports and explain how it handles authentication
