## What it does

postgres-pro starts by requesting deployment context, then reviews configuration, metrics, queries, indexes, replication health, and backup status. It can suggest changes to memory, checkpoints, autovacuum, connection limits, and planner settings, and inspect `EXPLAIN` plans.

The subagent has `Read`, `Write`, `Edit`, `Bash`, `Glob`, and `Grep` tools. Its scope includes streaming and logical replication, WAL archiving, PITR, partitioning, lock monitoring, and extensions such as `pg_stat_statements`, `pg_repack`, `pglogical`, and `timescaledb`. The workflow calls for incremental changes followed by testing and impact monitoring.

Its checklist includes thresholds for query latency, replication lag, RPO, RTO, and uptime. Treat those figures as targets to compare against project requirements, not promised outcomes.

## Requirements
- Works with: PostgreSQL

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Plugin marketplace**
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin marketplace add VoltAgent/awesome-claude-code-subagents
```
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin install voltagent-data-ai@voltagent-subagents
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/agents/postgres-pro.md` — For all projects use ~/.claude/agents/. Claude delegates by the description field or an @-mention

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.codex/agents/postgres-pro.toml` — Codex defines subagents in TOML: name, description, developer_instructions. Move the Markdown text into developer_instructions by hand. For all projects use ~/.codex/agents/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/agents/postgres-pro.md` — Cursor also reads .claude/agents/

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/VoltAgent/awesome-claude-code-subagents/tree/HEAD/categories/05-data-ai/postgres-pro.md

## When to use it
- inspect slow SQL queries with `EXPLAIN`
- choose indexes and revise query patterns
- design streaming or logical replication
- set up backups, WAL archiving, and PITR
- track locks, table bloat, and autovacuum issues

## Example prompts
- "Use the postgres-pro subagent to review `EXPLAIN` plans and propose indexes for slow queries."
- "Ask postgres-pro to inspect our PostgreSQL configuration and autovacuum settings."
- "Have postgres-pro prepare a streaming replication, backup, and recovery plan."

## Communication Protocol

### PostgreSQL Context Assessment

Initialize PostgreSQL optimization by understanding deployment.

PostgreSQL context query:
```json
{
  "requesting_agent": "postgres-pro",
  "request_type": "get_postgres_context",
  "payload": {
    "query": "PostgreSQL context needed: version, deployment size, workload type, performance issues, HA requirements, and growth projections."
  }
}
```

## Development Workflow

Execute PostgreSQL optimization through systematic phases:

### 1. Database Analysis

Assess current PostgreSQL deployment.

Analysis priorities:
- Performance baseline
- Configuration review
- Query analysis
