# performance-optimizer

A subagent that walks slow Vercel pages through diagnostic trees: LCP, INP, CLS, rendering strategy, bundle size. Use it when Lighthouse scores disappoint.

## What it does

This subagent does systematic performance triage on Vercel apps. Inside are decision trees for three Core Web Vitals metrics — LCP, INP, and CLS — each with thresholds and branches covering everything from hero image size to rendering strategy.

It checks image formats and dimensions, font loading via `next/font`, TTFB, synchronous scripts, hydration time, long tasks, and layout shifts. A rendering strategy tree guides the choice between SSG, ISR, streaming, and Partial Prerendering based on how often content changes. There is also bundle analysis through `next experimental-analyze` with import chain tracing.

The source text is truncated, so the bundle analyzer section and legacy tools are cut off mid-way. Enough remains for the agent to start diagnosing immediately. The analyzer command needs Next.js 16.1 or newer — worth verifying before running it.

## Install

### Codex (native platform)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.codex/agents/performance-optimizer.toml` — Codex defines subagents in TOML: name, description, developer_instructions. Move the Markdown text into developer_instructions by hand. For all projects use ~/.codex/agents/

### Claude Code

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/agents/performance-optimizer.md` — For all projects use ~/.claude/agents/. Claude delegates by the description field or an @-mention

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/agents/performance-optimizer.md` — Cursor also reads .claude/agents/

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/openai/plugins/tree/HEAD/plugins/vercel/agents/performance-optimizer.md

## When to use it
- trace a slow LCP back to an oversized hero image
- eliminate layout shifts from fonts and ad banners
- pick a rendering strategy based on content freshness
- trace bundle imports to find bloat
- reduce hydration time and main-thread long tasks

## Example prompts
- figure out why my LCP is above 2.5s on the homepage
- check INP on the checkout form and suggest fixes
- look at CLS: banners seem to shift content after load

## Core Web Vitals Reference

<!-- Sourced from observability skill: Speed Insights > Metrics Tracked -->
| Metric | What It Measures | Good Threshold |
|--------|-----------------|----------------|
| LCP | Largest Contentful Paint | < 2.5s |
| INP | Interaction to Next Paint | < 200ms |
| CLS | Cumulative Layout Shift | < 0.1 |
| FCP | First Contentful Paint | < 1.8s |
| TTFB | Time to First Byte | < 800ms |

## Core Web Vitals Diagnostic Trees

### LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) — Target: < 2.5s

```
LCP > 2.5s?
├─ What is the LCP element?
│  ├─ Hero image
│  │  ├─ Using `next/image`? → Yes: check `priority` prop on above-fold images
│  │  ├─ Image format? → Ensure WebP/AVIF (automatic with next/image)
│  │  ├─ Image size > 200KB? → Resize to actual display dimensions
│  │  ├─ Lazy loaded? → Remove `loading="lazy"` for above-fold images
│  │  └─ CDN serving? → Vercel Image Optimization auto-serves from edge
│  │
│  ├─ Text block (heading, paragraph)
│  │  ├─ Font loading blocking render? → Use `next/font` with `display: swap`
│  │  ├─ Web font file > 100KB? → Subset to needed characters
│  │  └─ Font loaded from third-party? → Self-host via `next/font/google`
│  │
│  └─ Video / background image
│     ├─ Use `poster` attribute for video elements
│     ├─ Preload critical background images with `<link rel="preload">`
│     └─ Consider replacing video hero with static image + lazy video
│
├─ Server response time (TTFB) > 800ms?
│  ├─ Using SSR for static content? → Switch to SSG or ISR
│  ├─ Can use Cache Components? → Add `'use cache'` to slow Server Components
│  ├─ Database queries slow? → Add connection pooling, check query plans
│  ├─ Edge Config available? → Use for configuration data (< 5ms reads)
│  └─ Region mismatch? → Deploy function in same region as database
│
└─ Render-blocking resources?
   ├─ Large CSS file? → Use CSS Modules or Tailwind for tree-shaking
   ├─ Synchronous scripts in `<head>`? → Move to `next/script` with `afterInteractive`
   └─ Third-party scripts? → Defer with `next/script strategy="lazyOnload"`
```

### INP (Interaction to Next Paint) — Target: < 200ms

```
INP > 200ms?
├─ Which interaction is slow?
│  ├─ Button click / form submit
│  │  ├─ Heavy computation on main thread? → Move to Web Worker
│  │  ├─ State update triggers large re-render? → Memoize with `useMemo`/`React.memo`
│  │  ├─ Fetch request blocking UI? → Use `useTransition` for non-urgent updates
│  │  └─ Server Action slow? → Show optimistic UI with `useOptimistic`
│  │
│  ├─ Scroll / resize handlers
│  │  ├─ No debounce/throttle? → Add `requestAnimationFrame` or debounce
│  │  ├─ Layout thrashing? → Batch DOM reads, then writes
│  │  └─ Intersection Observer available? → Replace scroll listeners
│  │
│  └─ Keyboard input in forms
│     ├─ Controlled input re-rendering entire form? → Use `useRef` for form state
│     ├─ Expensive validation on every keystroke? → Debounce validation
│     └─ Large component tree updating? → Push `'use client'` boundary down
│
├─ Hydration time > 500ms?
│  ├─ Too many client components? → Audit `'use client'` boundaries
