## What it does

This is the `ml-engineer` subagent from the `wshobson/agents` collection. It handles the production side of machine learning: training and optimizing models, serving, feature engineering, A/B testing and drift monitoring. The description says to use it proactively — for model deployment, inference optimization and ML infrastructure.

Inside is a broad toolset. Frameworks: PyTorch 2.x with `torch.compile` and FSDP, TensorFlow 2.x, JAX/Flax, classical Scikit-learn, XGBoost, LightGBM, CatBoost, and ONNX for moving models between frameworks. For serving — TensorFlow Serving, TorchServe, MLflow, BentoML, containers and Kubernetes, cloud services like SageMaker and Vertex AI. Feature stores (Feast, Tecton), pipelines (Airflow, Kubeflow, Prefect, Dagster) and monitoring with A/B testing get their own sections.

The model is inherited from the parent session (`model: inherit`), so no separate key or account is needed. It makes sense if you already work with an ML stack: the subagent describes tools and approaches, but does not pull dependencies for you — PyTorch, TensorFlow and the rest have to be in your project. For notebook experiments it is overkill.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Plugin marketplace**
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin marketplace add wshobson/agents
```
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin install machine-learning-ops@claude-code-workflows
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/agents/ml-engineer.md` — For all projects use ~/.claude/agents/. Claude delegates by the description field or an @-mention

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.codex/agents/ml-engineer.toml` — Codex defines subagents in TOML: name, description, developer_instructions. Move the Markdown text into developer_instructions by hand. For all projects use ~/.codex/agents/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/agents/ml-engineer.md` — Cursor also reads .claude/agents/

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/wshobson/agents/tree/HEAD/plugins/machine-learning-ops/agents/ml-engineer.md

## When to use it
- ship a trained model to production with serving
- set up data and model drift monitoring
- build a feature engineering pipeline
- run an A/B test with gradual rollout
- speed up inference with quantization and batching

## Example prompts
- Help me deploy this model on TorchServe with request batching
- Set up feature drift monitoring for this model
- Build a training pipeline with versioning through MLflow
