## What it does

This subagent focuses on gameplay rules and engagement loops. When tasked with a feature, it drafts specifications and builds mathematical models for in-game resource exchange.

It relies on `Read`, `Write`, and `Edit` tools. With them, the assistant inspects repository files and writes design documentation directly to disk. It also prepares level structure guidelines and testing protocols.

The subagent does not produce engine code. Its work focuses purely on systems design and balancing formulas.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **claude-code-templates**
```bash
npx claude-code-templates@latest --agent game-development/game-designer
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/agents/game-designer.md` — For all projects use ~/.claude/agents/. Claude delegates by the description field or an @-mention

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.codex/agents/game-designer.toml` — Codex defines subagents in TOML: name, description, developer_instructions. Move the Markdown text into developer_instructions by hand. For all projects use ~/.codex/agents/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/agents/game-designer.md` — Cursor also reads .claude/agents/

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/davila7/claude-code-templates/tree/HEAD/cli-tool/components/agents/game-development/game-designer.md

## When to use it
- calculate progression formulas and experience scaling
- draft a design specification for a gameplay mechanic
- build resource balance tables for crafting systems
- prepare playtesting protocols and evaluation criteria

## Example prompts
- Calculate an experience curve for character leveling from level 1 to 50.
- Draft a design specification for crafting mechanics and item resource balance.
- Outline a difficulty curve for the first three levels of our platformer.
