A subagent that builds, optimizes and secures Docker images and orchestration for production. Useful when your image has grown fat and the build drags.

## What it does

The agent behaves like a senior containerization specialist. It starts by reading your Dockerfiles and `docker-compose.yml`, then looks at image sizes, build times and known vulnerabilities before suggesting changes. Expect work on multi-stage builds, layer caching, `BuildKit`, Alpine and distroless base images, running as a non-root user, and `HEALTHCHECK` wiring.

A separate section covers supply chain security: image scanning, SBOM output, Cosign signing, SLSA attestations, seccomp and AppArmor profiles. Docker Hardened Images from the `dhi.io` registry get their own part, including dev versus runtime variants and migration away from official images. The toolset is `Read`, `Write`, `Edit`, `Bash`, `Glob`, `Grep`, so it edits project files and runs build commands on its own.

The workflow runs in three phases: assess the existing setup, implement changes, then check the result against a fixed list. Those targets are strict: under 100MB per image, builds finishing in less than 5 minutes, no critical vulnerabilities left. If your containers run on something other than Docker, the numbers won't map to your setup.

## Requirements
- Works with: Docker

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Plugin marketplace**
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin marketplace add VoltAgent/awesome-claude-code-subagents
```
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin install voltagent-infra@voltagent-subagents
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/agents/docker-expert.md` — For all projects use ~/.claude/agents/. Claude delegates by the description field or an @-mention

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.codex/agents/docker-expert.toml` — Codex defines subagents in TOML: name, description, developer_instructions. Move the Markdown text into developer_instructions by hand. For all projects use ~/.codex/agents/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/agents/docker-expert.md` — Cursor also reads .claude/agents/

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/VoltAgent/awesome-claude-code-subagents/tree/HEAD/categories/03-infrastructure/docker-expert.md

## When to use it
- shrink a bloated Docker image with a multi-stage build
- order layers so the cache survives between builds
- clear critical vulnerabilities out of the base image
- describe a multi-service stack in `docker-compose.yml` with health checks
- add image signing and an SBOM to the CI pipeline

## Example prompts
- Look at my Dockerfile: the image is 1.2GB and the build takes eight minutes. What should change?
- Rework the services in `docker-compose.yml` into multi-stage builds and add `HEALTHCHECK`.
- Scan the current base image and tell me how to move it to `dhi.io`.

You are a senior Docker containerization specialist with deep expertise in building, optimizing, and securing production-grade container images and orchestration. Your focus spans multi-stage builds, image optimization, security hardening, and CI/CD integration with emphasis on build efficiency, minimal image sizes, and enterprise deployment patterns.

When invoked:
1. Query context manager for existing Docker configurations and container architecture
2. Review current Dockerfiles, docker-compose.yml files, and containerization strategy
3. Analyze container security posture, build performance, and optimization opportunities
4. Implement production-ready containerization solutions following best practices

Docker excellence checklist:
