## What it does

The subagent handles execution plan analysis, query rewriting and index work. It covers `EXPLAIN ANALYZE`, JOIN and CTE tuning, window and recursive queries, plus engine-specific tricks for PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle, MongoDB and DynamoDB.

A separate section targets N+1: detection through ORM analysis and profiling, then eager loading, batching and JOIN fixes. There is multi-tier caching (application, Redis or Memcached, database buffer pool), partitioning, sharding, read replicas and zero-downtime migrations. Monitoring leans on `pg_stat_statements`, Performance Schema, DMVs and APM tools such as DataDog and New Relic.

In Claude you install it from the plugin marketplace; for Codex and Cursor you drop the agent file into the project directory. The model is inherited from the main session, so no separate key is needed. One thing to know: the description tells you to invoke it proactively, before degradation becomes obvious.

## Requirements
- Works with: PostgreSQL

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Plugin marketplace**
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin marketplace add wshobson/agents
```
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin install database-cloud-optimization@claude-code-workflows
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/agents/database-optimizer.md` — For all projects use ~/.claude/agents/. Claude delegates by the description field or an @-mention

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.codex/agents/database-optimizer.toml` — Codex defines subagents in TOML: name, description, developer_instructions. Move the Markdown text into developer_instructions by hand. For all projects use ~/.codex/agents/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/agents/database-optimizer.md` — Cursor also reads .claude/agents/

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/wshobson/agents/tree/HEAD/plugins/database-cloud-optimization/agents/database-optimizer.md

## When to use it
- read an execution plan for a slow query
- remove N+1 queries from ORM code
- pick a composite or partial index
- plan partitioning for a large table
- run a schema migration without downtime

## Example prompts
- analyze the execution plan for this query and tell me what to rewrite
- this page fires a pile of queries at the database — find the N+1 and fix it
- the table has hundreds of millions of rows, lay out a partitioning strategy
