# backend-development-tdd-orchestrator

A subagent that runs the red-green-refactor loop: test first, then code, then cleanup. Useful when a project needs test discipline kept in place.

## What it does

The subagent follows the red-green-refactor cycle and checks that tests come before code. It flags anti-patterns like test-after and partial coverage, and coordinates several testing agents at once: unit, integration, E2E. If your team writes tests whenever it gets around to it, this agent sets the rhythm.

It covers both TDD schools — classic (Chicago) and mockist (London) — plus ATDD and BDD. Languages include Java, C#, Python, JavaScript, TypeScript and Go, with frameworks like JUnit, NUnit, pytest, Jest, Mocha and testing/T. Property-based testing runs through QuickCheck, Hypothesis and fast-check; mutation testing and contract tests between services are in scope too. For legacy code the agent suggests starting with characterization tests and golden master to pin down current behaviour before refactoring.

The model is opus, so this is not the cheapest option for small edits. It earns its place on larger projects where coverage matters. For a one-evening script it is overkill.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Plugin marketplace**
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin marketplace add wshobson/agents
```
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin install backend-development@claude-code-workflows
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/agents/tdd-orchestrator.md` — For all projects use ~/.claude/agents/. Claude delegates by the description field or an @-mention

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.codex/agents/tdd-orchestrator.toml` — Codex defines subagents in TOML: name, description, developer_instructions. Move the Markdown text into developer_instructions by hand. For all projects use ~/.codex/agents/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/agents/tdd-orchestrator.md` — Cursor also reads .claude/agents/

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/wshobson/agents/tree/HEAD/plugins/backend-development/agents/tdd-orchestrator.md

## When to use it
- write the test before the code, not after
- keep the red-green-refactor loop going across a team
- split tests into unit, integration and E2E layers
- pin down legacy behaviour before refactoring
- check test quality with mutation testing

## Example prompts
- Start with a test for this endpoint, then implement it
- Run the red-green-refactor cycle for the auth module
- Check whether the project has tests written after the code
