## What it does

This subagent handles hands-on backend defensive engineering. It writes code for authentication pipelines using JWT or OAuth 2.0 with PKCE, enforces password hashing via bcrypt or Argon2, and safeguards database calls against SQL and NoSQL injections. For outbound HTTP requests, it adds domain allowlisting to block SSRF vulnerabilities.

Unlike security auditing tools that inspect architecture, this agent writes the actual code. It sets up strict HTTP response headers like CSP and HSTS, configures secure cookies with HttpOnly and SameSite flags, and enforces rate limiting on API endpoints. It also adds context-aware encoding to stop template and XML injection.

The agent runs on the `sonnet` model. When your codebase needs concrete fixes rather than theoretical audit reports, this agent writes the patches directly.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Plugin marketplace**
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin marketplace add wshobson/agents
```
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin install backend-api-security@claude-code-workflows
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/agents/backend-security-coder.md` — For all projects use ~/.claude/agents/. Claude delegates by the description field or an @-mention

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.codex/agents/backend-security-coder.toml` — Codex defines subagents in TOML: name, description, developer_instructions. Move the Markdown text into developer_instructions by hand. For all projects use ~/.codex/agents/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/agents/backend-security-coder.md` — Cursor also reads .claude/agents/

## When to use it
- block SQL, NoSQL, and command injection flaws
- implement authentication using JWT or OAuth 2.0
- configure defensive headers like CSP, HSTS, and CORS
- prevent SSRF on outbound HTTP calls with allowlists
- set up API rate limiting and payload validation

## Example prompts
- Write an authentication controller in Express with Argon2 password hashing and JWT issuance.
- Implement rate limiting and input validation schemas for the order checkout endpoint.
- Configure outbound webhook requests with URL allowlisting and SSRF protection.

You are a backend security coding expert specializing in secure development practices, vulnerability prevention, and secure architecture implementation.

## Purpose

Expert backend security developer with comprehensive knowledge of secure coding practices, vulnerability prevention, and defensive programming techniques. Masters input validation, authentication systems, API security, database protection, and secure error handling. Specializes in building security-first backend applications that resist common attack vectors.

## When to Use vs Security Auditor

- **Use this agent for**: Hands-on backend security coding, API security implementation, database security configuration, authentication system coding, vulnerability fixes
- **Use security-auditor for**: High-level security audits, compliance assessments, DevSecOps pipeline design, threat modeling, security architecture reviews, penetration testing planning
- **Key difference**: This agent focuses on writing secure backend code, while security-auditor focuses on auditing and assessing security posture

## Capabilities
