# architecture-modernizer

Plans service boundaries, event-driven flows, and target architecture for legacy systems. Use it when you need a concrete decomposition plan rather than a code-level refactor.

## What it does

The subagent examines module relationships and shared database tables before proposing service boundaries. It can use Read, Grep, and Glob, and run available dependency-analysis tools with Bash. Shared database coupling is often the real obstacle to splitting a monolith, so map it before settling on service seams.

Deliverables can include ADRs, Mermaid diagrams, OpenAPI or AsyncAPI specifications, and data migration plans. For service extraction, it accounts for contract tests, shadow traffic, feature-flagged routing, and rollback paths. Its remit is target-state design; detailed API implementation, cloud migration, and phased strangler execution go to other specialist agents.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **claude-code-templates**
```bash
npx claude-code-templates@latest --agent modernization/architecture-modernizer
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/agents/architecture-modernizer.md` — For all projects use ~/.claude/agents/. Claude delegates by the description field or an @-mention

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.codex/agents/architecture-modernizer.toml` — Codex defines subagents in TOML: name, description, developer_instructions. Move the Markdown text into developer_instructions by hand. For all projects use ~/.codex/agents/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/agents/architecture-modernizer.md` — Cursor also reads .claude/agents/

## When to use it
- map module dependencies and shared database access
- define service boundaries for a monolith split
- design event flows and API gateway contracts
- plan data migration between old and new services
- document architecture decisions with ADRs and Mermaid diagrams

## Example prompts
- Review this project and propose service boundaries for breaking up the monolith.
- Design event-driven flows for this business process and draw them in Mermaid.
- Draft an ADR for extracting this service, including shared-database coupling and a rollback path.
