## What it does

The subagent covers performance across application layers, from Core Web Vitals and database queries to service communication. Its areas include OpenTelemetry, distributed tracing, CPU and memory profiling, caching, load testing, and real-user monitoring. It can also help assess regressions and scaling behavior.

The listed tools include k6, JMeter, Playwright, and Prometheus. This is not a preconfigured test environment: checks still need to match your application and chosen tools. For Claude Code, the agent file is listed at `.claude/agents/performance-engineer.md`; Codex and Cursor have their own installation paths.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Plugin marketplace**
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin marketplace add wshobson/agents
```
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin install application-performance@claude-code-workflows
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/agents/performance-engineer.md` — For all projects use ~/.claude/agents/. Claude delegates by the description field or an @-mention

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.codex/agents/performance-engineer.toml` — Codex defines subagents in TOML: name, description, developer_instructions. Move the Markdown text into developer_instructions by hand. For all projects use ~/.codex/agents/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/agents/performance-engineer.md` — Cursor also reads .claude/agents/

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/wshobson/agents/tree/HEAD/plugins/application-performance/agents/performance-engineer.md

## When to use it
- locate CPU hotspots from a profile
- trace latency between services
- compare load-test results with application bottlenecks
- investigate slow database queries
- assess changes that could affect Core Web Vitals

## Example prompts
- Inspect the OpenTelemetry traces and identify delays between services.
- Help me plan an API load test using `k6`.
- Review these changes for possible effects on Core Web Vitals.
