## What it does

This subagent ships in the `wshobson/agents` collection and covers observability work: metrics, distributed tracing, logs, alerting and error budgets. It knows its way around Prometheus and PromQL, Grafana dashboards, Jaeger, OpenTelemetry, the ELK stack and Loki, plus SLI/SLO tracking and incident analysis. The model is inherited from the parent session (`model: inherit`), so no separate key is involved.

The description tells you to reach for it proactively when you touch monitoring infrastructure, performance work or production reliability. Kubernetes and the Prometheus Operator are covered, along with AWS, Azure, GCP and OCI monitoring, database performance and chaos engineering. There are also notes on Terraform modules and GitOps workflows for dashboards and alerts.

One caveat: the agent file is cut off in the cost optimization section, so the full capability list isn't visible there. If telemetry storage costs are what you're after, open the file and check before relying on the subagent.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Plugin marketplace**
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin marketplace add wshobson/agents
```
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin install application-performance@claude-code-workflows
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/agents/observability-engineer.md` — For all projects use ~/.claude/agents/. Claude delegates by the description field or an @-mention

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.codex/agents/observability-engineer.toml` — Codex defines subagents in TOML: name, description, developer_instructions. Move the Markdown text into developer_instructions by hand. For all projects use ~/.codex/agents/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/agents/observability-engineer.md` — Cursor also reads .claude/agents/

## When to use it
- set up Prometheus metric collection and Grafana dashboards
- correlate traces, logs and metrics to find a failure cause
- calculate error budget and burn rate against an SLO
- cut alert noise and route pages through PagerDuty
- deploy an OpenTelemetry collector across services

## Example prompts
- Set up Kubernetes cluster monitoring with the Prometheus Operator
- Walk the traces and tell me why checkout latency spiked
- Work out the error budget for our availability SLO
