# api-testing-observability-api-documenter

A subagent that writes API documentation: OpenAPI 3.1 specs, interactive examples, SDKs and developer portals. Useful when the API exists but the docs don't.

## What it does

The subagent covers OpenAPI 3.1 and AsyncAPI, GraphQL schemas and JSON Schema, webhook docs, and the whole API lifecycle from design to deprecation. It generates code samples in several languages, builds SDKs from a spec, and sets up Swagger UI, Redoc, Docusaurus portals, Postman and Insomnia collections.

Authentication gets its own pass: OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect flows, API key handling, JWT refresh, rate limit explanations. The agent also validates doc examples automatically and generates mock servers straight from the spec. It runs on the `sonnet` model.

No API keys or external services are needed to start, though features tied to Mintlify or ReadMe AI only work where those services are already wired up. Worth installing when you maintain several APIs and want one portal. For a single endpoint, a plain README does the job.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Plugin marketplace**
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin marketplace add wshobson/agents
```
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin install api-testing-observability@claude-code-workflows
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/agents/api-documenter.md` — For all projects use ~/.claude/agents/. Claude delegates by the description field or an @-mention

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.codex/agents/api-documenter.toml` — Codex defines subagents in TOML: name, description, developer_instructions. Move the Markdown text into developer_instructions by hand. For all projects use ~/.codex/agents/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/agents/api-documenter.md` — Cursor also reads .claude/agents/

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/wshobson/agents/tree/HEAD/plugins/api-testing-observability/agents/api-documenter.md

## When to use it
- describe a REST API in an OpenAPI 3.1 spec with request examples
- generate multi-language SDKs from an existing spec
- set up interactive docs with a try-it-now button
- document OAuth 2.0 flows and JWT handling
- write a migration guide after breaking changes

## Example prompts
- Write an OpenAPI 3.1 spec for this REST API and add auth examples
- Generate an SDK from the spec and document installation in the README
- Document the webhooks: payload, signature verification and error handling
