## What it does

This subagent turns business requirements and data relationships into a GraphQL architecture. It can shape SDL schemas with interfaces, unions, custom scalars, Relay connections, and a federation plan, then outline resolver design and schema evolution. Its scope also covers REST-to-GraphQL migrations, gateway aggregation, microservice integration, and registry governance.

For query performance, it works through DataLoader-based batching, N+1 diagnosis, complexity and depth checks, persisted queries, request deduplication, and response caching. Redis and CDN-backed strategies are part of its toolkit. It also designs field authorization with JWT and RBAC, rate limits, input protection, CORS settings, and production introspection controls. Subscription designs can use WebSocket or Server-Sent Events.

The agent is available for Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor. Claude Code installation uses `wshobson/agents` and places the agent at `.claude/agents/graphql-architect.md`. Because the agent describes architecture and implementation steps, a working integration still depends on the project’s schema, services, and data sources.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Plugin marketplace**
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin marketplace add wshobson/agents
```
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin install api-scaffolding@claude-code-workflows
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/agents/graphql-architect.md` — For all projects use ~/.claude/agents/. Claude delegates by the description field or an @-mention

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.codex/agents/graphql-architect.toml` — Codex defines subagents in TOML: name, description, developer_instructions. Move the Markdown text into developer_instructions by hand. For all projects use ~/.codex/agents/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/agents/graphql-architect.md` — Cursor also reads .claude/agents/

## When to use it
- design a federated GraphQL layout for several services
- trace N+1 queries and add DataLoader batching
- plan field-level authorization with JWT and RBAC
- map a REST migration while keeping existing clients working
- check a schema for breaking changes and future versions

## Example prompts
- Design a federated GraphQL architecture for our services and define each subgraph boundary.
- Review this schema for N+1 queries, then suggest DataLoader batching and a cache plan.
- Create a REST-to-GraphQL migration plan that keeps the current clients compatible.
