## What it does

This subagent handles API design and rework on FastAPI. It writes async-first code, defines contracts as Pydantic V2 models, and wires up SQLAlchemy 2.0 through asyncpg or aiomysql. The scope covers Alembic migrations, the repository pattern, connection pooling, Redis caching and background tasks. For auth it works with OAuth2 and JWT, role-based access control, and per-user or per-IP rate limiting.

It also covers testing and observability: pytest with pytest-asyncio, TestClient, mocks for external services, Prometheus metrics and OpenTelemetry tracing. Deployment means Docker multi-stage builds, Kubernetes, Pydantic Settings for config, and Uvicorn or Gunicorn tuning. The response follows a fixed order — analyze requirements, design contracts, implement endpoints, add validation, write tests, then optimize.

The model behind it is opus, and that matters: on a large codebase token spend adds up. If all you need is a skeleton with a couple of routes, a plain agent request will cost you less.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Plugin marketplace**
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin marketplace add wshobson/agents
```
In the agent chat (not a shell):
```text
/plugin install api-scaffolding@claude-code-workflows
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/agents/fastapi-pro.md` — For all projects use ~/.claude/agents/. Claude delegates by the description field or an @-mention

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.codex/agents/fastapi-pro.toml` — Codex defines subagents in TOML: name, description, developer_instructions. Move the Markdown text into developer_instructions by hand. For all projects use ~/.codex/agents/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/agents/fastapi-pro.md` — Cursor also reads .claude/agents/

## When to use it
- scaffold a FastAPI microservice from scratch
- convert sync endpoints to async/await
- wire SQLAlchemy 2.0 to an async driver
- set up JWT auth with refresh tokens
- kill N+1 queries and add Redis caching

## Example prompts
- Create a FastAPI microservice with async SQLAlchemy and Redis caching
- Implement JWT authentication with refresh tokens in FastAPI
- Optimize this FastAPI endpoint — it slows down under load
