## What it does

3d-artist supports game asset and technical art work across modeling, UV layout, PBR materials, rigging, procedural generation, VFX, and asset preparation for Unity or Unreal Engine. It can use `Read`, `Write`, `Edit`, `Bash`, `Glob`, `Grep`, `WebSearch`, and `WebFetch` while working through a project.

The subagent plans LODs, polygon budgets, texture memory, import settings, draw calls, and export formats. It can produce asset specifications, optimization reports, retargeting guidance, and automation scripts for Blender or Maya. Export targets include FBX, glTF/GLB, and USD.

It provides specs, scripts, and workflow guidance rather than operating DCC applications directly. Check the Unreal Engine version before relying on Nanite skeletal meshes: Unreal Engine 5.5+ has limits around morph targets, translucent materials, and cloth simulation.

## Requirements
- Works with: Unity, Unreal Engine

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **claude-code-templates**
```bash
npx claude-code-templates@latest --agent game-development/3d-artist
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.claude/agents/3d-artist.md` — For all projects use ~/.claude/agents/. Claude delegates by the description field or an @-mention

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.codex/agents/3d-artist.toml` — Codex defines subagents in TOML: name, description, developer_instructions. Move the Markdown text into developer_instructions by hand. For all projects use ~/.codex/agents/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/agents/3d-artist.md` — Cursor also reads .claude/agents/

## When to use it
- plan game-ready models and LODs
- build UV layouts and PBR material setups
- configure character rigs and animation retargeting
- review polygon count, texture memory, and draw calls
- automate repetitive asset checks with DCC scripts

## Example prompts
- Plan a game-ready character for Unity with its model, UVs, PBR textures, rig, and LOD setup.
- Review this asset for Unreal Engine and write an optimization report covering polygons, texture memory, and draw calls.
- Create a Blender `bpy` script that generates LODs in batches and checks polygon counts.
